I know Japan is relatively safe compared to other countries but letting your child just wander off all on their own is like asking for trouble

There is another well known city i believe somewhere in Finland or maybe it was Swedish, i can't remember that is supposed to be one of the Safest place in the world for children to just wander by themselves and "just be children" or something like that. I remember their motto was something like "The safest place for kids to grow up and be kids" or something.

I remember seeing a documentary about how parents really do just let their kids at the age of like...7 just wander around the city all by themselves.

Used to be so in world that no longer exists.

Finland was quite safe, even in urban areas during my childhood. Not so much anymore.
