Here in the US, hospital bills would cost $6700 for that, instead of 6700 yen.

I had two fillings put in at my dentist and it only cost $20 out of wallet. I have a kickass dental plan but the premiums are a bitch.

Probably a joke. "If you clear the stage (as in the game/hospital) with extra lives remaining (or if its the hospital if you're still alive), you get a free tour of the Bamboo Forest"

That's what... ~67-75 bucks, USD? Dood, that's not that bad. We have so many regulations and red tape here that we'd have to pay at least twice that just so doctors can make a living.

My monthly health insurance bill is around 25000 yen. But I pay almost nothing when I go to the doctor. When I cracked my molar playing soccer, I got one of those new seamless ceramic crowns (Dental is part of medical here). Cost me 5000 yen total for all my visits. When one of my friends had something similar done in NYC last year, it cost him $2000 WITH basic insurance.

Caucasians don't really have lighter skin tone than japanese people. The former are just more pinkish, whereas the latter are more of a beige.

Well, they're already pink-ish in this comic, and I'm just assuming. Mizuki-san already did that at least once, in american arc (post #828384). The best way is probably to ask him directly, he answers on twitter AFAIK.

I'm not used to medicine and things like it costing money and I'm quite happy about it. I hear costs in america are very high. I'm guessing that it's common for it to be expensive.

To put it in perspective, I had a medical check up, they took my blood pressure, made me turn my head and cough, and checked simple things.

    130$.

Yes, but when you do need to pay something for treatment, it's the price of a kidney in the black market... And that's probably the main reason why people flee to Poland to have longer treatments.

A German clinic wanted to charge me 130€ for cavity treatment and filling, when my old doc in my home country does it for about 20€.

Except you wouldn't pay the overwhelming majority of the amount you would have paid in the US at all.

American healthcare costs are at least 10 times as much as they should be simply because the Big Pharma lobbies have let most major medical providers charge whatever they want, while all the rest of the world actually manage to have some form of price controls that actually make their medical systems work. This country accounts for a wildly disproportionate amount of the actual corporate drug firm profits compared to the rest of the world, where the profit margins are kept down to the same general levels as food and the like.

Consider that when patents expire in our country, a medicine will drop in price from $500 to $5 practically the instant that a generic drug equivalent shows up. That $495 difference is pretty much pure profit. Now consider that US law has been rigged so that drug companies can basically extend their patents forever by simply mixing their drugs slightly with some of their other drugs (think Lipitor) and hence preventing the price of drugs from ever going down.

Make fun or cry "socialism" about other systems all you like, but our country is just being run by the lobbyists, for the lobbies, when it comes to healthcare, and it's a giant tumorous parasite on the country's economy.

Frankly, I think you're incorrect. It's not Big Pharma, it's Big Insurance. Who do you think is shelling out billions of dollars to Big Pharma?

Whenever insurance corporations stop paying so much money for a drug, the drug goes off the market, even if the patent hasn't expired on it. Big Pharma's making billions of dollars mainly due to the fact that it's one of the few major industries that actually produces a product that's useful to society. Out of all the mega-industries, Pharma's definitely not the worst of them.

Big Retail is looking more and more like a brick and mortar showroom for online products, Big Banking isn't loaning out money, and making Japan's current recession fall into a depression, Big Entertainment has gone into an all-out war against the consumer, and Big Insurance has in recent decades tried to find every way possible to break contracts with premium-payers.

I'm not saying that Big Pharma companies like Merck and Pfizer deserve all of the billions they rake in, but they aren't the only player in this mess, and they definitely aren't the biggest, either.
