God I love this Youmu. Hope she ends up on top. I'm somehow getting the feeling that at least some of the badassness in these last two pictures is going to dissolve as soon as the tails come out, and Youmu's not really known for being dominant. Also, what's that thing she's got?

It's used to oil the blade so it doesn't wear down as quickly, particularly while in the saya (or sheath/scabbard). Otherwise it tends to dull much easier due to the way katana are made.

Actually, that thing she's holding is used to spread a powder on the blade to polish the blade prior to re-applying oil during cleaning. I don't know it's 'proper' name in Japanese, but it can just be called powder ball. The maintenance is mostly to preserve the appearance of the blade rather than to keep it from dulling, necessarily. It's an anti-rust measure, which can be just as problematic.
