I really can't picture Marisa falling in love with Rinnosuke, myself. I mean seriously now, the guy just doesn't seem suited to pair up with nearly anybody in Gensokyu, if I do say so myself. Nitori was the closest thing to a match, if only for her love and curiosity of technology, but Marisa? From my point of view, that just feels... Forced, frankly.

Plus, all signs pointed, least of what I could see, toward Marisa being interested in NITORI, not Rinnosuke. She kept trying to find ways to get Nitori to spend time with her, alone, tried to invite her to go stay with her at the hot springs, then Rinnosuke just got invited along, and yet... She's interested in Rinnosuke? Frankly, I don't buy that.=/

This kinda feels like mediocre bait and switch, to me.

Which makes Marisa's confusion over Nitori's enthusiasm to pair here with Kourin even more hilarious.

Bait and switch? That's what I say about going from Youmu/Reisen/Sakuya to this.

No. I believe you're viewing those events with narrow glasses and trying to interpret actions and dialogue in what you want to happen. Marisa didn't state she was just inviting Nitori, she didn't state she intended to be alone together with Nitori.

It was meant to be vague and Nanaroku did as good a job as ever for that. Marisa's actions could be interpreted easily as having affection for either one or even both of them. You have the Marisa seeing Nitori as a rival and trying to best the kappa to make herself look better then her rival to Rinnosuke angle. You have the Marisa attempting to look good to Nitori by impressing her angle. I just don't see how you can say it's a bait-and-switch when it was meant to be vague and was quite well done in being vague. The only flaw that Nanaroku did was give the MariRin tag for this portion of the series a long time ago.

Actually, I didn't see a single sign pointing towards Marisa being interested in Nitori. Her denying to be bored of being with the Kappa in post #916177 basically means she is bored of being with the Kappa.
In post #918326 she's close to using Master Spark on Nitori for getting in her way.
And both her invitations to the hot springs were towards Rinnosuke and she got angry when he consulted Nitori post #920074 post #924667 .

You may need Curiosities of Lotus Asia for that. SakuRin, ReiRin and especially MariRin shipper may born because that book, just like me.

And I think being only male in Touhou universe made him almost suitable to paired with everyone, well if you're search for alternative relationship other than yuri though ...

I respect your opinion buddy. Sometimes I adore yuri too, but nanaroku has given us hints about MariRin few pages back.

Even their canon relationship plausibility is very high (knew each other since she was young, that nickname 'kourin' & the connection between the name 'rinnosuke' & 'kirisame').

I'm trying to be flexible here. Since nearly all of Gensoukyou are girls, my interest to yuri pairing (like Reimu x Yukari) can't be avoided, but I have my OTP in straight pairing too.

Speaking of those, the translations show it more to be leaning towards her going for Rinnosuke, especially in lines like "Why is he consulting with her!" Which is why it took a while for me to notice that it was actually supposed to be vague on who she was interested in.

Could any translator verify if all of them were meant to be vague or if any of them gave specifics of who her target was?

Except that Rinnosuke is not the only male in Touhou. There are plenty of men in the Human Village. Marisa's father lives there for one thing. The reason why you never see them in the game is, ZUN can't draw men that well at all, and in-game reason is that danmaku and spell cards are a girls' sport in Gensokyo.

Oh, that's canonical? I saw it mentioned in passing in a story I read recently and thought it was an interesting concept. Fits with the thoughts on equality that existed back when Gensokyo got separated, IIRC...

To be specific it's a "Young" girl's sport. ZUN has mentioned that Reimu will stop "Playing" danmaku when she grows up. Marisa will probably keep "playing" it.

Depsite Reimu's lazy attitude, she is the more serious one of the 2.

Depends on what you consider "Young". Remilia and Flandre are both way older but both are still "young" in their respective race. The fairy characters are older but retain having a childish demeanor forever. Most of the youkai characters are also young and a kid for their respective races. As for some of the older the characters, inb4 Yukari is 17 years old and old maid alliance.
