Anyone want to explain to me what's going on with teh Suika on the far left? I have no idea.

If you didn't know, read more about why spiritus(the liquid used in burner) is usually tinted blue.
And why, yes-that is not kerosene. Otherwise Suika wouldn't try to taste it.

Hm, I'm pretty sure her sake is heavier than that lamp.

That may be so, but sake is ethyl alcohol, while burners usually use methyl, which is about three orders of magnitude more toxic. Funny how much one carbon atom can change a compound...

There's a story/anecdote about a Russian chemistry professor, who used to sample the ethyl alcohol at his university's lab after work, a beakerfull "just to take the edge off", so to speak. His only problem was his age, and his eyes were going kinda bad. So one day, he goes ahead, and pours out his usual amount, only this time, he reaches for the wrong bottle, next to ethyl alcohol: methyl alcohol.
He was found dead by the janitors that evening.

One of the only thing I remember from grade 12 chemistry: The treatment for methanol poisoning contains ethanol

The other probelem with methanol is that it is also less intoxicating than ethanol, so if you for some reason try to get drunk off methanol, you will almost certainly end up dead.
