It was a whole new world. A stand-alone region with its own set of legends and mysteries.
It brought us Team Magma VS Team Aqua, pokemon abilities, double battles, the Battle Frontier and so much more.

Although they excluded the day/night cycle in the Gen III games ... I loved that feature when I played the Gen II series. I think that's the reason why I disliked the Gen III games, although the Battle Frontier was definitely a very nice addition. It was only implemented on Emerald though (which I only played later via emulator) so I didn't get to use that feature on my Sapphire Version.

At least the Ruby/Sapphire arc of Pokemon Special was one of the best arcs.
