I'm not so much fuddled by kanji as by context. There's no actual subject or object in Mamizou's dialog for panel 2, so I don't know if she's actually saying "I have to reply if I'm asked," or "You have to reply if you're asked." Neither quite seems to connect to what's happening.

Also, the protacted "no" emphatic at the end of her sentence (plus referring to Nue as a "maiden") makes Mamizou sound like a stereotypical elderly person.

There is picture of her sitting on a rocking chair with a chibi Kyouko makes her seem like one.

I didn't realize that was part of the story, since it wasn't in the pool or parented/childed to one of the pool images.
