I doubt that was the issue in this case; this is Shaft after all. They kept Oshino's upside-down crosses in Bakemonogatari, then there's the Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP and Maria†Holic . . .

I on the fence about whether that might have been an issue or not in this case. Shaft stuff for the most part isn't as worldwide mainstream so they should be fine with the symbolic stuff even in anime form. But then look at someone alot more mainstream like Shounen Jump and DAMN, they do their best to make sure they don't offend anyone.
