What's most upsetting is that this tended to work many, many, many times.
Sometimes even in the same battle.
I mean, look at it this way: You're part of the shield wall or what have you, and you keep getting shot by horse archers. They can attack you from further away than you can, but they can also get away from you faster than you can chase them. They're too fast for you to even shoot them back effectively. And they're constantly just swooping in, shooting you, backing off. If your guys are armoured well enough, they're probably not killing or even really wounding more than a handful of people, but still. You just have to sit there, taking the shots, while your friends die around you. Every time they do this, you're one lucky shot away from dead.
Even if you were a normal person and not a soldier in whom a willingness and desire to kill has been actively cultivated... eventually you're gonna get too frustrated and do something stupid just to try and make them stop.
