The most surprising thing about this is that Momiji, a portrait-less mid-boss, got third place, behind Reimu and Sakuya but in front of many staple characters. I guess she is that cute.

Shinki is the leading PC-98-only character in 42th place.

Unzan is 16th but Ichirin herself is　46th, just behind Murasa.

The leading Generic Enemy is the Maid Fairy in 80th place.

ZUN himself is 58th.

Tokiko is both 92th and 128th, the latter as "Nameless Book-reading Youkai".

I figure it's seasonal in connection to Momiji's signature maple leaf , since I've never seen the Aki sisters in the 20's before.

Actually, is the contest judged based on the images that come up when you click on the character's name... by number of pageviews perhaps? If so then I'd guess the amount of recent fanart has something to do with the rankings, which I think supports the seasonal theory.
