Aliasing football -> american_football.
Reason: "American_Football" is more descriptive.

The tag for American football should be american_football, but football's ambiguous nature makes it a poor choice for an alias, IMO.

Agreed. It puzzles me why football was the tag in use in the first place. But considering how little posts use that tag, I understand why nobody noticed before.
A related problem is that I found there doesn't seem to be a tag for the balls themselves. I've used football_(item) for that. Should that also become american_football_(item)?
EDIT: Just found out we also have football_uniform and football_helmet. The first of which should imply sportswear, and both of which should imply american_football. And both should also be renamed.

Why would it puzzle you? There are a lot of North Americans here who would just call it football (and Association football already has a good alternative over just "football" with the name "soccer").
Going by wikipedia, I'd probably have to go with a -1 for trying to change "football" to "American_football" or trying to remove the current images under the tag to more specific tags. Visually it appears that "American football" would look identical to "Canadian football ." While certainly the majority (if not all) will probably be "American," I don't see a reason to try and lump them all under "American" when there is the possibility it isn't "American" football.
At minimum the ball used between American and Canadian football are visually identical, so trying to move the ball name to "American_football_(item)" gets a -1 by me. There is also apparently Australian football, and while the ball is more rounded at the ends I think that the visual difference of the actual ball is well within the range of an artist just fudging the drawing of the ball.
Can always just call the ball a "football ball." Sounds awkward, but probably no more awkward than any other place that uses football to refer to a sport and has to distinguish the ball used in said sport. Also, when classifying it as an item/object if we have to, we'd list it as "football_(object)" and not "football_(item)."
Those are some good arguments. Hadn't thought about Canadian/Australian football.
Football_(object) is a lot better than football_ball. Can a mod rename football_(item) to football_(object), or is someone (me) going to have to change the tags manually? EDIT: Never mind, did that.

I've used football_uniform for soccer-related posts, I think. Check before aliasing.
There was one post like that, and I changed it to soccer_uniform.
Changed every post that I previously tagged American_football to football.
What still needs to be done:
*Implicating football_helmet to football.
*Implicating football_uniform to sportswear and football.
*Implicating football_(object) to football.
I also found out we have sport tag. Should football also impicate that? No other sport tag (baseball, tennis, etc.) seems to implicate the sport tag...
I'm not sure about implicating the sport from the uniform or ball. If it's just a football lying in a pile of stuff in a gym storage shed, does that warrant the football tag? or the baseball tag for post #1173204 ? etc.
