On resolutions

What is the norm for uploading resolutions? Highest possible? Big enough to fill up the screen but no need for more? I have shots from various cg sets that come in multiple resolutions, but I feel like 1100x1600 and up is just a waste of bandwidth and hd space, so I've been trying to keep those close to 800x1200. If the communinty is geared more toward getting the best possible quality/resolution, then I can do that too.

Okay, I am going to try to explain this very clearly.

When you have a picture at multiple resolutions, there are two possibilities. First, the larger one can be closer to the original artist's rendition. If this is true, the extra pixels are conveying extra information, and we say that the "quality" of this picture is higher.

The other possibility is that the picture was expanded, in which case the extra pixels in the picture are filler, and may actually be misleading. We say that the "quality" of this picture is equal, or more often less than, the "quality" of the smaller picture.

So if the image is larger, and closer to the original artist's rendition, and has not been subject to an upwards resize, than the quality is better.
