My understanding of "bowtie" in English is that it always means a necktie.

There are some examples of images tagged with bowtie where the tie is not a necktie. For example, post #680232, post #4580, post #59847, post #59822. But they seem to be quite uncommon. I searched for bowtie -necktie and nearly all the results contained neckties.

My understanding is that yes, bowties are always worn around the neck (your counterexamples are simply bows); but a necktie exclusively refers to long ties, rather than those tied in a bow.

It does, but in English, I'd never use "necktie" to refer to a bowtie. Maybe that's just me.

Sure a necktie is technically just something worn around the neck but currently the two are visually separated and I see no gain in implicating them other than "a bow tie is a type of necktie" which is just semantics.

We can skip the bowtie -> necktie implication I think.

I have no real opinion on bow_tie or bowtie but an alias job from bow_tie to bowtie would sure be a lot less likely to break and fail. I dread aliasing anything over 800 posts.
