That seems counter-intuitive to me. I'm thinking of it more from a spoken-language perspective, though. Normally, I would say someone has a backwards hat and not a hat backwards. I suppose, in short, I would suggest backwards_hat instead.

I think it depends on context.

  • He is wearing his hat backwards.
  • He is wearing a backwards hat.

If you reverse the phrase in either it sounds slightly odd, even though the only thing that changes is "his" to "a". In the first "backwards" is an adverb modifying "wearing", in the second it is an adjective modifying "hat".

Because in the second case though we'd be using the entire noun phrase, rather than a partial verb phrase, I think I'll second Eld on backwards hat.
