Should I list OCs on artists' pages?

Posted under General

In howto:tag checklist, it is said that if some original character is reoccuring, it will most likely be listed on the page of its artist.

On the other hand, in help:artists it is said that artist wiki entries are "typically only reserved for important details such as requests not to merge with any alt artist entries, or if the entry is for a commissioner/reposter of some kind". From this it doesn't sound like it should include list of artist's OCs. And in practice, I almost never find any info about OCs on artist's page.

Should I add info about OCs to artists' pages? For example, artist #59266 has a lot of OCs with their own tags, I wanted to create a wiki page listing all of them, but I'm not sure I should.

Several of these help pages haven't had a good update in years and have some information inconsistencies. It is completely fine to list artist OCs in an artist tag wiki, and that's generally been a practice for as long as I can remember. It's not a requirement to make one but you can. It's helpful and nice to look at for browsing especially if an artist has multiple that they draw frequently.

Here's a list of pages that contain the phrase "original character" ordered by how many posts the artist has on their artist tag. Other relevant details are also okay: for example, han-0v0 has some general tags for homework submissions associated with artist classes they teach, and ask (askzy)'s wiki includes characters they designed professionally.

In other words: go ahead.

@mieoi Just a heads-up: the "Adding too many personal details should also be avoided" part still applies as far as I can tell, and that includes things like gender and nationality (see forum #223216). The update that added that line is actually recent, but I think the rule seems to have been in place long before that.

I don't know if there's exceptions for things like extremely well-known, non-anonymous professional artists (famous mangaka, etc.) since trying to hide that information would be rather pointless, but I don't think leaving that information in adds much anyway. When in doubt, leave it out.

On that subject, han-0v0's wiki entry probably needs another look.

Honestly, "nuking on sight" is probably not enough to get rid of nationality info.

Searching for "chinese" in artist wiki pages gives me 843 entries. That's not something that will be cleared on its own in a reasonable time.

What if the artist publicly makes their gender and nationality known? Sasucchi95 drew drawings of her persona holding or with the Kuwaiti flag. (post #3528884, post #7469407, post #8025520, post #10420308). She also indirectly revealed her birthyear on her Youtube channel on this video at 0:22 and what day her birthday was in on her public Twitter before if you search up birthday on her tweets. Mamimi (mamamimi) also revealed his birthyear and birthday on this tweet.

I think all that info is not that useful on Danbooru anyway.

That's true, but my question still stands, does nationality and gender still count if the artist makes it publicly known and revealed it themselves on their social media bios? Sasucchi95's Youtube profile already states her nationality and gender right off the bat. I can understand birthdays because you'd have to dig little harder despite them being public but some artists make their nationality and gender known on their bio.

They might share that information now, but they might change their mind later, which would then prompt then to go and search for any mention of their personal info elsewhere online. Opting out of including that info in the first place saves us the potential later hassle of an artist coming here asking for that info to be removed.

I think the han-0v0 wiki is good as is. They are a professional artist and the wiki talks about their relevant professional work and explains meta-information about derivative art.

Also I think listing artist OCs in the artist wiki is a good practice. It's not like they're easy to find otherwise.

Yes, lists of OCs are fine. I was talking strictly about unnecessary personal information. Specifically, I was wondering whether the part stating that he's a Chinese artist should be removed. It might be simpler to just do that for all artists, even if they're well-known and their nationality is obvious, just so users don't have to think about it too much.

OC tags are supposed to include the artist's name as a qualifier to make them easier to search, but it's not 100% reliable as some users forget to add it and I don't think this practice was adopted until relatively recently.

Also, artists can be renamed, and folks will often forget to also make BURs changing the qualifiers on said characters.

True, but nonamethanks said in forum #293914 that adding qualifiers to every unqualified OC isn't a priority and that we should focus on ambiguous names or characters named after ones from established copyrights.

Yeah. I was just focusing on the fact that having a list of OCs in an artist's wiki would make it easier to spot those mismatched qualifiers for OCs, since you'd open the wiki and see a different qualifier than the artist tag's name.
