Source updating and the bad_id tag

Posted under General

There is little value in keeping a dead link in the source field. The only reason I can think of is URL-based mass edits. But those only matter when there is no artist tag or there's two artists under one tag.

I don't think the source field needs to be "this is where the image originally came from", but rather "this is where you can find the image". Even if there's no artist tag, a good link is better than a dead pixiv link. Of course, that only applies if the new link is to the artist's site or blog or similar, not to some random site that just reposted the image.

Still, I'd update the link even if the file on the blog isn't binary identical. At least then the link is actually useful.

Dead pixiv source links should stay even if the posts are tagged, to indicate where they originally came from and why they were tagged with that artist. Cleaning up artist entries, I've come across plenty of cases where a single ambiguous artist tag was applied to posts by multiple pixiv artists. Removing the dead links messes up URL searches and only makes sorting things out harder, and there's no benefit.

Also disagreeing about changing sources for non-identical files.

Source URLs should point to exact copies of the file.

I'd upload the image on the blog, and set it as the parent of the image in question. Isn't that standard practice?

I'm with EB and RaisingK here, the source ought to link to an image that hashes the same as the one posted, otherwise the source should be left alone. As for uploading and parenting, that is obviously what to do in the case of better versions, otherwise a comment on the existing post would be appropriate.

Yeah, I should've made it clear that I intend for a source to link to the exact same image. That's what I had meant by "correct source link" in my first post.

With that, I'll go ahead and update sources on some bad_id pics I had spotted.

I agree with the following:

- Leave dead source links in for find artist and source search purposes.
- If you find an identical copy of the image at a new URL, update the URL.
- If you find a similar one, upload it and make it the parent. Might want to leave a comment on the image too so people don't flag it duplicate.
