Anime screenshots as official promotional material

Posted under General

Anime screenshots are currently listed as borderline content in the upload rules, and the anime screenshot wiki itself does not mention anything about them being strictly prohibited. I understand why people posting their own random screenshots, crops, stitches, etc. is frowned upon, but are official, properly sourced screenshots generally viewed the same way?

From what I can tell, a lot of people seem to agree that they're just as pointless as "just" posting screenshots. Personally I also don't really see much difference between official accounts posting screenshots and users posting them.

Honestly it depends on a case-by-case basis. Often it's not anime screenshots, but key visuals or officially stitched versions/stuff that'd be hard or impossible to obtain from the anime.

Think of it that way: the rationale for anime screenshots being frowned upon/useless on a site like this is that anyone can just take the original anime and create their own screenshots effortlessly. If an official account is posting a detexted or high resolution version that's not widely available, that argument loses a lot of weight.

I definitely agree that in case something of value is added it's absolutely fine. Texless, higher res, etc. Something like post #7897408, which is just a mediocre quality screenshot at source resolution with a copyright notice added, not so much.

Is waging a pogrom against anime stills on what is supposed to be an anime art gallery really meaningful?

This is correctly sourced and tagged promotional material, what does this actually accomplish?

I support the de-banning of quality (Blu-ray, high res versions) anime screenshots. It doesn't make any sense for high quality pics to be banned. Just add a filter and make sure to tag them as such if people don't want to see them

Categorical mass flagging against borderline content should not be acceptable. If this is considered acceptable, then it is not borderline but disallowed.

I always assumed the prohibition against anime screenshots were more meant for posts like post #9594564 not uploads like post #9114212. I think if a screenshot from an official source is of decent enough quality that it could pass as a VN CG then it should be allowed here.

There are also situations in which a game reuses frames from anime, like post #7703914. Is this disallowed content too?

Someone please help me understand the psychology behind this behavior, why is post #7271586 and post #7812278 something that is considered inadequate for a anime art gallery focused on quality but post #9834154 and post #9833904 are?

I feel like nonamethanks explanation above is adequate.

There are plenty of instances where screenshots like eyecatches and production art are uploaded and I don't think anyone has an issue with it. post #7271586 is a compressed screenshot anyone could take and while it's cute it's not what most people are coming here for. This doesn't seem like a new policy either given most active art under anime screenshot is stuff like screenshot redraws or 8+ years old. There aren't lot of cases of contributors posting en-masse so this recent wave is like a trial by fire I suppose.

No comment on the junbuug art that's a separate potential issue and it feels like apples to oranges to compare them.
