DAT ASS = spam?

Posted under General

Ban everyone who posts this fucking comment.
That and "I agree" or "lol" or anything involving "internets" or "THIS LOOKS LIKE XXXX FROM TOUHOU" or anything involving roleplaying in the comments or emoticons or "epic".

There's a difference between posting you opinion and copypasta a meme just because it's applicable given the visual reference.
Although the occasional well placed meme/humor can always be forgiven if actually funny.

Some people's opinions should be banned.
Some people's opinions are funny.
Its impossible to differentiate between the two among a giant userbase.

These are all subjective though; in reality nobody should be banned because of a comment unless its exceptionally bad but the comments that you can't ban someone for are sometimes the most irritating.

We need a comment voting system and the ability to blacklist certain threshholds of comment scores. That way, some people will know that they are being annoying and prevent others from seeing it.

For example User A posts "xD". Feka downvotes this comment to a -1 score. Granola has his blacklist set to see only comments 0 and above and doesn't see it, breathes easier at night.

"DAT ASS" wasn't ever funny, it's not adding anything worthwhile to comment threads, and the users actually bumping posts with this crap more often than not have similarly awful comments. So not only should it be considered general spam, it also violates the "Don't post silly one-liners" rule in howto:comment.

Seconding a comment rating system, but make it exclusive to Priv+ accounts.

Absolutely essential.

What the fuck we don't need youtube's comment system.

Just avoid comments altogether if you really can't stand them. Flag really stupid ones for deletion. This isn't that complex an issue.

Avoiding comments is difficult and should be completely unnessasary.

Flagging stupid comments is too harsh for some comments and may generate a gigantic workload. Remember the 9 pages of unapproved posts and the complaining that caused?

Besides, like the unapproval system now you may get an incredibly retarded janitor/mod that thinks DAT ASS is totally hilarious.

I'm absolutely certain someone can whip up a greasemonkey script to hide all comments in about 5 minutes if it's really that important to you.

If you're too scared to flag a comment because you think the janitors are going to be upset you may have bigger issues, they volunteered for the job to help keep the site up to quality standards, just because there's an influx of shitty comments doesn't mean they shouldn't be flagged.

Uhh, to be honest I haven't looked at the comment mod queue in months. So flagging more won't necessarily help, because I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who finds the comment queue impossible to manage and not a good way to spend modding time. That and I literally forget it exists for long periods of time because comments are something I rarely look at or make.

The stuff that gets flagged is often entirely frivolous. Basically people just disagreeing with someone elses' opinion. Hell I saw someone flagging a comment because it pointed out what they were doing wrong. And almost every comment in the queue requires you to go in and read the whole conversation (if one exists), and then decide if other parts of the conversation need to be removed as well, or if the comment should be kept as evidence of wrongoing etc.

If you see someone repeatedly and egregiously abusing comments, alert a mod via PM. I've dealt with a few people that way before. And if I am looking at a post and happen to see a stupid comment, then yes I kill it. But the comment queue? It's basically broken. (Looks like there are about 500 comments in it right now)

There needs to be more liberal application of the ban hammer. Just take a look at the user record list. There are tons of people getting negative records for posting really terrible comments, yet they don't get banned.

If there aren't enough mods paying attention to the comments then maybe some janitors should be promoted to mods.

Along with alerting a mod directly, this is probably the best way to deal with comments. Just make sure you're negging (or PMing) for the truly bad stuff. If someone makes a single "Cute!" comment on an image, that doesn't warrant a negative, or a rude reply. If they do what khzkanako did, then well, yes, I ban them for 27 years.

The effectiveness of negative records is fairly closely tied to how smart people are in applying them. If a neg becomes something completely superfluous, it's no longer going to be taken seriously. Not accusing you or anyone else of this right now, but offering it as a guideline.

I think I'm going to stick that page in updatescanner so I can check it more regularly. It looks like records are reasonably paced enough that following it shouldn't be too hard.

Edit: do note, however, that even if I agree with the negative record, that does not mean a ban will follow. The neg is itself a punishment already, as it raises the chance that future infractions will be dealt with more harshly than if there were no previous negs.

Also, in the case of ordinary members, negative records can serve as warnings to mods not to invite them too eagerly.

oh my bad. i had no clue ppl were offended by a silly ol' meme.

whatever.......

What was the point of bumping a three month old thread for? You didn't even add anything meaningful.

Sometimes I just don't understand you people.

Anyway, as far as anyone actually getting offended, I doubt it. Comments exist to share your thoughts, and to give some kind of meaningful input on a post. Meme-like comments are just worthless noise/span, and annoy anyone who tries to read them. What can one possibly learn from reading a legion of "dat ass!" and "lol xDDD" comments?

That's what the issue is, here - it's not a matter of people getting offended.

Yeah, Bapabooiee understands the point. Stupid comments are annoying, but generally inevitable given what many users come to the site for.

The issue here was that users bumping every other post they see with whatever meme that was shit out of a random 4chan thread goes from annoying to fucking obnoxious for others to read.

...As for javien's necrobumping, that was because I had sent him a PM regarding a couple of his recent comments and linked to this thread. Nothing else to see here.
