You might want to read about:note formatting. Background color property is in the Advanced markup section.
Keep in mind that embedded notes won't work well for some comics. In post #3718342, for example, there is a vertical line of Japanese text next to another block of text in a speech bubble in the second panel. The text from the line ends up getting cut off by the block of text when embedded notes are enabled. It might be possible to combine the notes so it all fits, but there are also phrases outside of speech balloons and dialog boxes such as in the third panel. A benefit to regular notes is that they are semi-transparent, allowing one to see all parts of the image underneath (granted, clicking on the posts will hide the notes, anyway). Since embedded notes use backgrounds that will overlay the image, they are more suited for text that are on backgrounds of a single color such as speech balloons.
