Same picture, different sources (duplicates)

Posted under General

I remember it being said around the time Twitter changed its image compression method that duplicates would be less likely to get approved going forward, to help discourage them, but since the flagging guidelines say not to flag them, users with unlimited privileges can basically circumvent that possibility. I actually warned one of the uploaders of those examples about it earlier, though it might not have stuck.

The automated checks for pixel-perfect duplicate also negatively affect users without unlimited uploads.

e.g. if I post a pic with a higher filesize (thinking it should be the parent):

  • the parent-child gets reversed
  • the post gets stuck in limbo for 3.x days
  • without approval, it negatively affects my upload score

It doesn't feel fair.

Unless you're only uploading duplicates, your upload limit won't really be affected by the occasional duplicate not making it through the queue. The system is designed precisely so that only very high deletion ratios will bring down upload slots.

100kb higher filesize doesn't mean it's necessarily a better version. You can use DuplicateBooru to check. Otherwise it's entirely the fault of the uploader that their duplicates are deleted. There's no reason we should allow duplicates through just because some people are too careless.

Then why do we not delete duplicates from those with unrestricted?
All those uploaders are being careless!

Shrug, I wasn't the one who decided that. If you think our policy should be changed you can always make a thread on it. Though it'll be irrelevant in due time as evazion is working on a better duplicate system.

At the moment, downloading is prohibited, but there is no deletion or ban of the image (Appeal is not allowed). This is likely due to the lack of actual duplicate removal (source file & etc). Maybe, when the total size of duplicates is significant for the server, then they will come up with some kind of cleaning.
