Cosplay revision

Posted under General

The curant rule for cosplay posts are that if character1 cosplays character2 both of their character tags must be included. This is a absurd rule since charactet1 is only wearing a costume and does not become a diffrent character. The cosplay general tags are there to overcome this problem but thanks to the rule the general cosplay tag automatically ads the character that is being cosplayed's tag. This is irritating because when i search for one of my favourite characters i only get results of other characters cosplaying the character. A example is artoria_pendragon_(lancer_alter). Please fix this

That was just a example but the core problem is still that your rules on coaplay are flawed. A characters tag should on only be put on that character.

But if it's changed the people who want to see both the character and those cosplaying as the character has to use 2 tags instead. Now it's just a simple action of including the -character_(cosplay) tag if you only want to see the character.

That does not make any sense. You are saying that people that want to see both the character and cosplays should only have to use one tag even though it is teo diffrent things. This is while the person that wants to see only the character has to use two tags.

The clothes are not the characters entire identity. So all i am saying that if people want to see the cosplay and the character they cant just use the ~charcter ~cosplay. It defeats the entire perpose of a tag system if a character tag includes other characters that are not searched.

You can refine your search results by putting a minus sign in front of a tag you don't want to see. If, using your example, you want to find only posts with artoria_pendragon_(lancer_alter) but nobody cosplaying as her, just search for artoria_pendragon_(lancer_alter) -artoria_pendragon_(lancer_alter)_(cosplay).

That will also exclude all posts with artoria_pendragon_(lancer_alter) and someone cosplaying as her.

Current system:
Find only character x: x and ignore cosplay images, alternatively x -x_(cosplay) and miss images of x with cosplay of x
Find only cosplay of x: x_(cosplay)
Find both: x
Find x with cosplay of x: x_(cosplay) and start looking manually. Adding multiple_girls or multiple_boys may help but also produces a lot of false positives.

Without the mandatory aliases:
Find only character x: x
Find only cosplay of x: x_(cosplay)
Find both: ~x ~x_(cosplay)
Find x with cosplay of x: x x_(cosplay)

I fail to see how the current system has any advantages. I only see disadvantages.

Thank you that is my point exactly. Needing to cancel out other character while you are searching for character x is absurd and unnecesary. It overcomplicates the entire system and should be revised.

Thoughts

In topic #13004 that I mentioned above, I did a pretty decent breakdown of different tagging schemas. Going by that, we're currently using scheme #1. The scheme being proposed is #2. To nuke all *_(cosplay) tags would be scheme #3. There would be no reason for a hybrid scheme (#4) with cosplay tags.

The following tables were copied from forum #126233 which demonstrate the different search precision between scheme #1 and scheme #2.

Note: The linked Venn Diagrama was used for the following tables: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UfUTU3vRWfMmvXdFl_lpFCllb6Ve2bkC

Legend
  • A: CHARACTER_(cosplay)
  • B: CHARACTER
Scheme 1

A implies B

Area desiredSearch terms
1Not possible
2Not possible
3{-A B}
1,2{A}
2,3Not possible
1,3Not possible
1,2,3{B}

Also of note, {A -B} is the null set (i.e. no results), {A B}=={A}, and {~A ~B}=={B}.

Scheme 2

A,B are separate tags

Area desiredSearch terms
1{A -B}
2{A B}
3{-A B}
1,2{A}
2,3{B}
1,3Not possible
1,2,3{~A ~B}

Final

As in topic #13004, I'm in favor of #2 (i.e. the scheme being proposed in this thread) since it offers the best search precision. Besides that, it'll finally do away with that annoying behavior of changing the base tag to a character tag even if accidentally used on a non-character tag, e.g. naruto_(cosplay).

If we do go with the new proposal will we change the character_(cosplay) tags to character tags instead of general? I feel like it would be the better option since otherwise it would look weird with 2 (or more) different copyright tags and only 1 (mostly) character tag.

I'm kind of ambivalent about that, though they do admittedly get lost among the sea of blue.

Not wanting to derail this topic too much, but we could potentially pursue a 6th tag category for them as proper name nouns (excluding character tags of course). Previous discussions (topic #14714, topic #13001). Discussion on this, if there was interest, would go in its own thread of course.
