The gold tag

Posted under General

The wiki for gold has, for quite some time, defined the tag as one meant for gold coins. In practice, this tag is used for almost anything else made from gold, be it armor, jewelry, apples, etc. This begs the question, if this tag was originally intended to be used only for gold coins, why isn't it intuitively called gold coin? And more importantly, what should we do with it?

One answer is to redefine gold as an inclusive tag for any objects made from the material, which would largely match how it is presently being used. This would be a pretty simple fix consisting mostly of rewriting the wiki and adding the coin tag to a lot of posts where it was previously omitted. The downside of this approach is that it makes for imprecise searching: post #2230645 appears in the search results for gold apple, for instance.

Another possibility is a major clean-up of the tag, possibly renaming it to make sure it isn't accidentally misused again. We could mandate that golden items be tagged individually. Tags already exist for gold armor, golden apple, gold cloth, and so on, so some of the work is already done for us. The lack of a catchall tag could be frustrating in the case of unusual items, though. For example, should post #716405 be tagged gold chariot?

Any additional insights would be highly appreciated.
