"gif" as an alias for "animated"

Posted under General

In the event that the Web does progress beyond an image format less archaic than GIF (say, MNG or APNG), shouldn't "animated" be considered the more correct tag to retain, with "gif" added as an alias?

I'm pretty sure the only use of "gif" tagging is for animated images -- you wouldn't use "jpg" or "png" tags for uploads made in those particular formats.

But aside from that, as a method of futureproofing, and for the sake of format-agnostic tagging outside of Flash (which is proprietary and much more complex than an animated GIF), wouldn't it be smarter to rely on "animated" as the primary tag?

Right, the only purpose the 'gif' tag serves is to indicate animated gifs.

It's something that can be remedied in a matter of seconds if it becomes necessary at some point (a mod mass edits 'gif' to 'replacement_tag'). Right now it probably isn't, but yes, perhaps in the future we'll probably wind up doing so.

Sounds reasonable to me. Tagging them as "animated" makes a lot more sense. It would be kind of nice to be able to search by file type; that would allow you to catch gifs/flash files that haven't been tagged as animated fairly easily.

Image file size and resolution filtering would be nice too, if only to stop people from using junk meta-tags like "1600x1200" or "highres". It would also help curb leeching by anonymous and basic users.

Umm.. you can already search by resolution. And the 1600x1200 and other wallpaper size tags are nice because they aid people searching for particular wallpaper sizes (so you want the wallpaper tag to go away then too?). And highres and absurdres are good for people with limited bandwidth or RAM so they can avoid the picture before they click on it.

What's the point of using those tags if you can already filter results by resolution? Say you want a minimum of 1600x1200 for all your results, or conversely a maximum of 800x600. Wouldn't that be sufficient?

As for filesize filtering, I guess the only time it would be really useful would be for lengthy animated images, in which case you could instead just filter by the number of frames contained in the animation.

P.S. How do I search by resolution? :(
