Should repost sites be used for the source of posts?

Posted under General

The whole point of the source field is to track the origin of a post, but using repost sites like image boards or e-hentai seems to defeat that purpose.

Certain posts like doujin scans that don't have a real URL-based origin and I've heard that those are handled by entering the doujin's full title with circle and convention tags included. Is it alright to replace repost site sources with the full doujin title?

I've always thought putting doujin titles in the source field is useless. It's impossible to actually search for them using the source: metatag. You can't use spaces in the search and wildcards time out. Trying to search anything that's not an URL just doesn't work.

Much better to include that information in the pool title or description. Even a comment would be easier to search.

Really?

source:comic*lo
source:comic*kairakuten

Seem to work fine for me.

Besides, searching by source is not the only reason the source field exists. It exists to tell people what the image is from.

That works if the doujin has a pool. But if just the cover or a single page is uploaded then a pool should not be created.

I often use The Doujinshi & Manga Lexicon URLs ( http://www.doujinshi.org/book/~ ).
Any opinions about this?

That sounds pretty good to me. That page has the title, as well as the romanized title, links to where you can buy it, as well as other useful information.

Things like source:*C83* or source:*touhou* don't work though. There's no enforced standard for titles in source fields either, so searching just source:C83* doesn't work when everyone uses a different title format:

  • Touhou - Suwakoto! [C83] (sakana (ryuusui-tei))
  • Touhou - Vermilion supplementary booklet at C83 (warugaki (sk-ii))
  • Touhou - C85 comic [sample] (Bomber Grape)
  • (C84) [Tohonifun (Chado)] Ijin-san ni Tsurerarete (Touhou Project)

We're a search engine. That information should be in a form where it can be easily searched.

It'd be like if we just listed copyrights in a text field on the post instead of adding tags -- great, you know which series it's from, but good luck trying to search for more from that series.

I see no problem with single post pools. They don't interfere with anything. It would let you search the pool index to find all doujins, even things that (currently) only have a cover page.

I'm against single post pools for doujinshi (covers) simply because it will only encourage users to upload the whole thing.
