Makes perfect sense to me actually. Selkies were shape shifters, said to live as seals, but to shed their skin and become human when on land. If you stole a Selkie's seal skin they couldn't return to the ocean. In one particular legend a man stole a Selkie woman's seal skin, hide it, and married her. Eventually she found the skin however and left.
