Looking through the Dragon Quest wikis I noticed that all of the characters use their japanese names, even the ones that have long had official English names. For example, Angelo from DQVIII is tagged as Kukuru even though no one in the fanbase calls him like that, the game never had a fan translation so the official localised name is what pretty much everyone knows him as. The same I assume goes for every other character due to all the old games receiving official English releases, so most modern fans must know the characters by those names.

I used aliases for names with titles in the tag and for unmistakable names, but renames for simpler names that could potentially be used by other characters or things. This includes common names in need of a disambiguation like Medea and Ulysses.

On an unrelated note, I found curious that the wiki for dragon_quest listed all the female characters alongside the titles. I assume it was made as a sort of "here's what you came here for, wink wink, nudge nudge", so I removed them since there's already a character list anyway.

The current convention is to use _(dragon_quest) as a qualifier for characters not from or strongly associated with a specific game. We use _(dqn) (with n being the game number) for characters from specific entries. Make sure any characters specific to the first game are qualified with _(dq1) instead of _(dq).

Edit: Didn't look hard enough. Some use _(dragon_quest), others use _(dq). This definitely needs to be fixed.

Also, characters with one-word names should typically use qualifiers, especially when some are likely to be used for other characters. Desdemona, for example, is the name of an Othello character, and should definitely have a qualifier. Pang Lai is a character in Quanzhi Fashi (Versatile Mage in English) and also needs a qualifier. A quick Google search doesn't show any other uses of Lazarel and Serenica (which I find surprising), but their names sound enough like normal names that someone could feasibly give those same names to their own characters. Adding the qualifiers now would save us the trouble of having to sort these characters out in the future.

I personally think it would be better to expand all of the qualifiers to _(dragon quest_n) and do the same for Final Fantasy, but it would probably be better to discuss that in a new thread.

Okay, I fixed all of that. At first I was hesitant to expand the qualifiers to dragon_quest (since I don't think there's anything notable that uses the initials DQ), but then I noticed the qualifiers for spinoffs are just a bunch of incomprehensible letters like dqb2. So I figured I might as well go all out and make them all dragon_quest (I also changed Nimzo to Grandmaster_Nimzo to be more specific and keep consistency with the other chess titles.).

Sounds good to me. Though you'll need to change Desdemona's qualifier. She appears in the second Heroes game, not the first.

You're trying to do two different things here, change qualifiers AND change names. Don't do that.

We have a lot more tags than these using the DQ qualifier.

This is also not the only multi-series copyright that has this kind of abbreviated qualifier, Final Fantasy uses a similar system.

Well, sorry about that, but Blank User mentioned it would be better to expand the qualifiers, and I agree with him. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, these qualifiers can end up looking like an ugly bunch of random letters (like dqb2), which apart from being unclear could potentially be ambiguous among copyrights that share initials.
I understand if you're of the opinion that the original qualifiers should be kept (because I think this update is important enough that I would be willing to change it back), but that could also be solved by updating all other tags using the dq qualifier.

I did say changing the qualifiers should be discussed separately, though I did go along with the idea of changing them in this BUR and should've caught on to that. Let's change the qualifiers back to the abbreviated ones for this BUR. After we make sure all of the Dragon Quest characters are aliased to their localized names when applicable, we can then create a new BUR proposing the qualifier expansions.

Okay, I changed them all back.
