create alias tank_top_lift -> shirt_lift

You might as well add create implication tank_top -> shirt to this BUR. If the above is true, then this is as well.

Wikipedia classifies tank tops as a form of sleeveless shirt, so this alias seems reasonable.

What does everyone think of this potential implication?

I think it might be worthwhile at this point that we consider switching from using the term "shirt" for most of these and begin using the term "top" (ie "a garment worn on the upper body").

I would be interested in such a discussion.

if it means less tags all the better.

I would be very much in favor of combining all of the shirt-type garments under one umbrella scheme.

Items

I think I got most of them.

For clarity, the above items would still stay, it's just that all of the qualifier versions of them, such as color and pattern, would be combined under one umbrella.

Name candidates
  • 1. *_top
  • 2. *_topwear
  • 3. ???

I'd be in favor of #1 myself, since topwear to me implies a larger grouping of items (sweaters, cardigans, vests, jackets, coats), which I'm thinking is not something we want to do.

Edit:

Updated

Why hoodie, which is usually worn over other clothes unlike all the rest of those?

And I still despise the name of "x_top" or "x_topwear" as I'm certain that either would get flooded with jackets, coats, vests, etc. and I'd be strongly opposed to combining those into the same tag as shirts and shirt-like items.

Agree with this. Also for serafuku, which has a non trivial amount of cardigans, sweaters and jackets.

Then we need to have a definition for shirt on danbooru that literally isn't defining it as any piece of clothing worn on the upper body, which is exactly what the current definition is. There is also already a lot of usage for tags like shirt_lift for hoodies and sweaters.

Can despise the term "top", but as general usage for the term and the definition matches up with exactly what we're trying to use the term shirt for: any piece of light clothing worn on the part of the body above the waist

If we can cut down on tags that basically mean the same thing then I'm in for an alias.
Like in this case.

Shirt lift +tank top would then result in mostly the same search results.

As for the other idea:
Why not use "shirt" as the umbrella term for all shirt-like items?

I think it would be easiest to just leave shirt as the umbrella tag, and broadly define shirt as any kind of top that is normally worn by itself. Things like jackets, coats, vests, or hoodies aren't shirts because they're not usually worn by themselves, they're usually worn over a shirt.
