[REJECTED] Borrowed Character

In the guidelines Type-kun laid out in forum #139154 (which, if we're still following them, ought to be used to fill in the help:metatags stub), metatags are supposed to be technical tags, not meta about the image content.

I propose that meta tag should, in general, fall in one of those categories:

  • Information describing image as a digital file: dimensions, filesize, formats
  • Information about image source: various bad_id, *_reward, protected_link, inactive_account, etc. game_cg or screenshot would apply too.
  • Information about other available versions of the image: revision, *_available, *_sample
  • Information about third-party modifications: photoshop, cropped, stitched, 3rd-party-watermark, etc. hard-translated would fall in here, too.
  • Technical tags necessary for danbooru functioning: *_request, check_*, commentary, translated, replaceme, the dreaded tagme.
  • Information about reference or derivative work: derivative_work, reference_work, photoreference, vector_trace etc.

Other tags would be added on case-but-case basis, but should have no direct relation to image content.

borrowed_character doesn't fall into any of these categories.

This should be classified as meta knowledge, you can't know if a character belongs to the artist or not from the image alone (most of the time).

Arguably, the same argument could apply to a suggestion of converting all artist tags into meta tags, because it seems that in most cases you can't know if a character belongs to an artist from the image alone. (images with a signature notwithstanding, but then again the signature is an optional thing; a borrowed_character image might possibly have a note saying "character created by: ..." all the same)

It's true that knowing the origin of a character is a "meta" thing in some sense, but I agree with fossilnix and the quoted Type-kun that the "meta" tags on Danbooru have specific guidelines as described above.

Using the tag apple is meta in some sense, because you need meta-knowledge of what an apple is before doing the tagging. Just an example that fits the current discussion. All things considered, apple looks just fine as a general tag.

borrowed_character looks fine as a general tag too.
