Danbooru

subjective tags; shouldn't those be deleted?

Posted under General

I don't think that epic should be deleted. It's often used for images that are truly original, and 99% of the community can agree on as awesome. I think content tagged with it should be watched closely, but it shouldn't be deleted.

peaceful and cool_girl should definitely be deleted, IMO. Way too subjective to be of any real use.

*shrug* I have mixed feelings on subjective tags. On one hand I don't like them, as they can easily cause headaches on what they are. On the other hand there were a lot of subjective tags in the past, and part of me wants to preserve "relic" elements of danbooru (such as a lot of the older images that would not be acceptable now) to see how danbooru has changed overtime.

In short I'd support not using subjective tags, but outright deletion (on specifically fairly old content) seems a bit unnecessary. Of course I'm probably a hypocrite so feel free to ignore me.

My take is that subjective tags should not be used. Not unless they're actually being used in an an objective manner, such as what we're trying to work out for gloomy. And in that case, it's not really a subjective tag, it just uses a subjective word.

I agree with jxh2154, subjective tags used in an objective manner should stay, all others should be deleted, IMO.
But if you want subjective tags to be used in an objective way, you will definitely need a wiki entry for that tag, so people know exactly when it may be used.

(gloomy has a wiki entry, but it only gives a link to the site of gloomybear. I'd love to make a new wiki entry for that tag, but I'm not very good at that stuff.)

If I may on the behalf of "epic", there are certainly qualifiers for it under certain use. Mostly, the image has to have a scope and/or intensity, typically precipitating, in the midst of, or during the aftermath of an event (I'd suppose mainly showdowns) of such scope and/or intensity. A singular person may also encapsulate this, but "manly" would prolly apply to some such.

That's really, really subjective though, even if you try to narrow it down. It needs some kind of concrete visual cue, which you can't really do with a term like 'epic' which can mean too many things.

"Epic" sounds quite unambiguously subjective to me (as do the other tags mentioned in the opening post).

If a normally subjective word is used to describe a phenomenon that can be objectively identified, such as in the case of the "gloomy" tag, I don't see why there should be any trouble, though.

so we can at least agree that the cool_girl tag has to go?? (I don't get that tag either....) About the "peaceful" tag; although I do see some kind of similarity in the images tagged peaceful, I still think this should either be deleted, or should be used way more often.

(I'm sorry if my english seems kinda broken)
(BTW, you guys still didn't tell me if I have to contact an admin/mod before destroying a tag.)

In general, yes, you should discuss that on the forum and get greenlighted. Unless it's something totally obvious like a one-time misspelling.
