This character is a Black Knight. Black Knights are strong enemies in the game. However, it is possible to obtain that armor, therefore this picture could also be a regular player, who is hunting for humanity (the white thing in his hand).
And by "strong," we mean "there's this thing about a badass looking dude standing still with their back towards you. It means you gotta stay the fuck out."
They're that strong, but not impossible. They can easily be circled around and stabbed in the back. Learn to do this because...hehe...believe me, the knights that appear early in the game are just practice compared to an area that's chalk full of em'.

Humanity? Damn, I want to play this game even more. Searching around I found the tag Artorias the Abyss Walker. Is that an anemy too or what?

He's dead, but his Great Grey Wolf Sif guards his grave. Sif is a boss that uses Artorias' Greatsword against you. When you beat Sif, you can use his Soul plus a +10 regular greatsword and get a Golem blacksmith to forge the Greatsword of Artorias so you can use it yourself.

I suspect it is a player, given how they're holding the shield. Iirc, the Dark Knight enemies hold it with the broad part pointing upwards, whereas the player holds it facing downwards, thus meaning when he brings his arm up in front of him it's in the proper position.
