The 1st OVA was shit, though. I've never seen a great concept ruined so utterly in practice. Nobody cares about two girls doing retarded girl things, but what everyone actually came for, you know, Black Rock Shooter and its particular style, was completely consumed by 25 minutes of generic moe bullshit.

I agree the time could have been put to better use, as people were expecting BRS and DM to battle it out with a decent plot reason for it. I knew the second the school girl designs came in that the concept was downhill from there. Some positive things about it, Mato and Yomi are far from moe, in fact I think the director went out of his way to avoid the moe factor and focused on friendship and emotion, thus their development and personality was interesting.
But in dedicating so much time to this method, BRS and DM were pretty much a cameo in a OVA that was meant for them. I would hope a second OVA would redeem that.

Speak for yourself, the school life portions were fantastic character study.

They may have been fantastic character study but the intended audience wanted Black Rock Shooter and action. Not that it didn't turn out great as it is now.

They weren't interesting at all, though! And I'll be damned if this wasn't supposed to appeal to the moe crowd. Cute little girls doing cute things in seifuku and being perfectly set up for the fandom's retarded homolust shipping? Right.

Um, no, no they most certainly were not. Blatantly. If you want a "fantastic character study" than look at Utena, or Kara no Kyoukai, or Jin-Roh, or Gankutsuou, Princess Tutu, or even the first two seasons of Nanoha, but whatever you do, don't call this a "fantastic character study" as if it's some work of art, because it is far, far, far from fantastic. It is boring, it is generic, and it is not even well directed. There is literally nothing in the school-life portions that has not been done far better by other works. There isn't much material to character study in the first place considering the two main females are as cliche and uninteresting and overdone as could possibly be.
I can't just tell you to stop liking what I don't like and I apologize if that what it's coming down to, but seriously, you just seem inexperienced with media in general if you can actually like this sort of garbage.

It's not great though. It was a huge disappointment that horribly undermined the coolness already established by Huke's artwork. I am kind of hoping the second OVA never comes out so this blemish upon the franchise can quietly fade into obscurity as if it never even existed.
Personally i like the OVA, even the school parts, yes i like it and i'm sure i like the second one in the futur.
But for some people it's boring and senseless, for me it's okay, i like to see how mato and yomi become friends, how she became death master, but I think that's not what fans expected from the ova.
No action, no "big" fight between BRS and death master (or random encounter) and some character are just useless for the first ova...
Like black gold saw, she appears only at the begining for no reason (yeah impaling brs, it's wonderfull), Strenght don't do anything... (well a this time yuu are not strenght).
I know nothing whatsoever about the plot/characters/whatever of BRS, but if you really expected a fan work picked up by a major company not to be altered to maximize mainstream appeal, I would advise you to prepare for a lifetime of disappointment.
