The japanese alphabet has no 'v's. The Japanese have limited pronunciation when it comes to english (or other languages). This is because they can only pronounce words based on the japanese alphabet.
The Japanese alphabet consists of 5 main vowels: A (ah), I (ee), U (oo), E (eh), and O (oh). The rest of the alphabet consists of syllables that add a consonant to the front: ka, ki, ku, ke, ko/ sa, shi, su, se, so/ ha, hi, fu, he, ho etc.
For example, they pronounce vampire as "banpaiya".
Although in the end, it gets damn annoying when Hiragana is used instead of Katakana when the word itself is supposed to be damn not japanese. Which is probably where the confusion came from in this instance.
