I wonder what the proper way to translate "kuukan" (space, region) is?
Yeah, sure, the literal meaning is "space", but it's a relatively fancy word for "space". I think it's one of the difficult Chinese-derived words which would send a typical reader to the dictionary. Kyon uses it here probably because it's on his mind from "閉鎖空間" (heisa kuukan, Closed Space).
Like any other person, I am tempted to try and come up with a similar obscure Latinate English word for "space." Although jamming an obscure English word into a sentence usually comes out awkward and pretentious, there are some beautiful short Latinate words like "littoral" (meaning "shoreside") which do have the proper mood. I can't think of a nice one which means "space", though.
Or could you just stone cold use Latin and have Itsuki talk about the... uh... I guess it would be locus clausus with the plural loci clausi.
