Heinkel He 162 Spatz is a jet fighter of the Luftwaffe. Though its pet names, like the RLM's "Volksjager" or air force's "Salamander", are famous, it was called "Spatz (Sparrow)" by its developers Heinkel. It was developed concurrently with the Messerschmitt Me 262, and compared to the two-motored Me 262 and its steep learning curve the He162 was (originally) designed for ease of operation and maintenance, so that inexperienced cadets would be able to pilot it effectively. As a result it was outfitted with one single jet engine on its back. The He 162's speed, the main feature of a jet fighter, was, like the Me 262, well suited to Germany's strategy. However jet engines were at the time very unreliable, and it was quite reckless to use a single-engine design. Had it been put into use it is likely that many more young pilots would have been lost.
