She was just very physically weak. After giving birth to Konata she just didn't have the strength to keep her body functioning and to live on. I don't think it was a disease, only a genetic defunct or something like that.

That's pretty much the canon death. Heard that Koanta's mother was very ill and her body wasn't the average size for a women, in fact, it was below average due to her failing health.
Also, I'm listening to "Mother" by John Lennon and THe Mother (named after said Lennon song)/Earthbound Zero theme as well and this just make this picture even more heart breaking with those songs.

That reminds me of a picture in the "Soul-Crushingly Depressing" pool, where a daughter tells of her frail and ill mother, who was told, that if she would continue her pregnancy and give birth to her daughter, she'd die. She was OK with it, give birth to her and died. Her father convinced his daughter not to blame herself for her mother's death. T_T
