I'm quite interested in it (read and own a few volumes of it), and I was a fan of the original series when it first aired. Of course this and the original series are different things, so I'm sure there will be those who are disappointed.
Of course I'm a fan of a Nagato, so there is my bias.
I was asking because, from what i've seen on forums and stuff, not that many people know this new anime is happening. Of course, a lot of people know about Haruhi but, newer anime fans haven't watched it, the first series being almost 10 years old and, older fans either abandoned it after endless 8 or after the movie (since it was a nice end) 5 years ago.
I'm an old fan of the series myself. I've read the LNs though so I really wish they'd animate the next few volumes. As for this I'll take any bit of Haruhi Suzumiya being a fan. My only gripe is that it's a different studio and different art style.
Still it's great to see the VAs doing a reunion. Haruhi Suzumiya was my gateway into the Anime/Manga/LN culture, so this series as tarnished it is, still holds a special place in my heart.
A lot of people are upset - I wouldn't say it goes all the way to anger, but it might be close - that this is happening rather than a legitimate third season. Me? I'm happy to see the characters animated again, even if it's in a different fashion and with a different feeling.
I've read the manga this is derived from, I know this is pretty much just Haruhi made into Slice of Life. I'm not bothered by it though. Looking forward to it quite a bit.
The spin-off series upon which the new season is based is a pretty adorable read. Also having read the (complete?) light novel series thus far, I would say that I would've preferred a continuation of the main storyline with Sasaki and...others. But it's still Haruhi, or rather Nagato this time, so it's bound to be entertaining.
Is it odd that I'm looking forward more to the VA acting than the animation itself?
A lot of fellow fans I know who didn't like the studio and art style change, would still check it out due to the fact that Sugibro, Aya Hirano, Daisuke Ono, Yuko Goto and Chihara Minori are reprising their roles. I'm even glad that Yuko Goto, who had to take a break from the business due to health issues, is once again busting her chops.
And even Aya with her tarnished reputation, I'm looking forward to her once again donning the SOS Brigade Chief mantle.
To be honest I would have passed this series if they changed the cast, which is highly unlikely. It just wouldn't feel the same considering how much I love the chemistry of these 5 seiyuus.
I'm just hoping a possible Season 3 will come out of this. A man can dream though.
I watched the original series when it aired, and the second, and the movie, and Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san, and read all the light novels (in English) and check the suzumiya_haruhi_no_yuuutsu tag on danbooru daily, I didn't realize there was going to be a new animated series.
Is anyone else around that caught haruhi when it first aired? Mostly I wanna see if any old fans still cares about this.
It feels weird for me...Kyon's design is so different. Nagato's new personality is actually fun but not as fun as the old one. Tsuruya and Mikuru is still the same and Asakura replaced Haruhi's position in the show where she torments Kyon and Nagato. It's kinda cute Asakura isn't killing Kyon for once. The movie version had the better depiction of this alternate world. Nagato is quite a bit cherry in the new anime.
oh and kyonko appeared in the show as a cameo. at the school gate there were three girls talking and at the middle you'll see a girl with a pony tail with 3 bangs that resembles kyonko's.
Having watched the first episode now, I'm not gonna dismiss it outright; I honestly wouldn't mind if they took the Shoushitsu premise and just made the whole thing a slice-of-life.

Isn't Yuko Goto recovered though? Ah well, glad to see the old gang back.

I watched the original as it first aired, starting from like the airing of the fourth episode, or so... (Can't remember it exactly...) I was actually more of an anime-watcher then than I am, now.
I love and loved the series, even though the Endless 8 fiasco was jaw-droppingly stupid, and, considering how much of the staff walked out on a director that insisted on it no matter how obvious it would fail, a real indictment on the Japanese value on seniority. I didn't finish watching the second season, and I read the English-version light novel of Disappearance, rather than watch the movie.

Actually, I rather like that Asakura gets to be the gentle (if firm) older sister, and Mikuru takes a real backseat to Tsuruya. The two of them really steal the show in many respects in the manga. (Tsuruya even steals Haruhi's role as Mikuru-groper.)
It's also a bit of a plus that Kyon isn't drooling over Mikuru ALL THE FUCKING TIME, but the biggest letdown would be that Kyon's sarcastic inner monologues were arguably the best thing about the original series, and seeing them disappear into Kyon-the-bland-everyman is a serious setback to the series. It's like Haruhi dragged the interesting Kyon off with her to her world, and left behind a boring everyman Kyon in his place. (In fact, if you look at the OP song, he's only there to catch Yuki near the end. He's not the protagonist of this story, he's just the prize to be won.) ...Well, at least he treats Yuki with respect interesting Kyon never showed Haruhi, and Yuki gets to win, this time...
