In that instant, I settled on the miserable procedure of waiting for the sprayed-on primer to dry, sanding down any rough spots, then re-spraying on primer.

Incidentally, cheap polishers have so little torque that they stop spinning the instant you press them down, so it's a safer choice to buy one that's suitably priced.
