At the end of 3-1, there are a pair of koopas walking down the stairs. If you position yourself right and jump on the shell the right way, you'll bounce the shell and at the same time stop the shell, allowing you to jump on it an infinite amount of times and thus infinite one-ups.

Basically it's a trick to constantly bounce off a koopa shell that goes down the end of the level stairs, in a fashion that you build up points and one ups, though if you mess it up the shell would go flying away.
After 9 lives, you get crowns 0-9 and then crowns A-Z! And then... random stuff I believe. But if you do it more than 128 times the number becomes negative and the next time you die, it's game over. Ah nostalgia, you got me~
Nope, I'm pretty sure it's 9. Remember, this is the ORIGINAL Super Mario Bros. game. The programmers never expected anybody to have more than 6 or 7, and the numbers of 1ups were fairly low, and of a finite supply, except for this infinite lives trick, which was mostly an accident.

Yes as I think after they found out about this trick they made an effort to put in a lives limit.
