This kind of reminds me of a scene in Mel Brook's [Robin Hood, Men in Tights]: Marian: Promise me you won't attend the fair! Robin: Hm? if it worries you, that's fine. I won't go. M: Oh thank goodness! because they're having an archery contest! R: (suddenly VERY interested) an Archery contest??? M: You mustn't! their archer is unbeatable! R: Reeheeheeally?!
Saw the second panel and initially thought that Suika was wearing the clock, a la Flava Flav. Her expression there is still adorb, but I feel vaguely disappointed now. :/
Also: I remember reading somewhere that the tengu were subordinate to the oni, but I didn't realize that the kappa were as well.

Before the oni went underground, youkai mountain was their turf, so by extension those that lived there (tengu, kappa, etc.) were under their thumb so to speak.

I remember that... the "Challenge Accepted" face.
Krik Krak
The stock phrase of the mechanically inept...!
Sorry ta call ya out here, kappa!
Y-yes'm.... When summoned by an oni, I would travel through fire or water...
Bow
This clock's busted, even though I didn't do nothin'!
Crumble...
W-...well, then how about this?
Even an oni's strength couldn't break this one, okay?
