It was released in 1982 and for its time the animation was very good. It was all hand made, without any of the advantages computers provide these days (I'm refering to the excess of CGI and other tools that have made animators more lazy and less talented or innovative today).
Also, the designs in the original Macross are superior to those in many other real robot mecha anime series released later.
