Currently we have tied and tied_up tags. Both are decently populated, don't have a wiki and appear to be used for pretty much the same thing.
I wasn't able to find any thread about them so can't say if they were originally intended for different things, but so far it looks like an alias would be the best resolution. Not sure about the direction of the alias though.

Completely agreed. Just the other day I was trying to decide between adding tied and tied up to post #1265931, and decided on tied since the latter indicates a more full-body tie. However, there is a hands_tied tag too, so I don't know where to go from here.

Shoot, forgot about the restrained tag. I'm all for the alias now.

You should use bound_wrists instead. tied_hands is already aliased to bound_wrists.
tied can mean anything is "tied", and some people do interpret it that way: post #1233402, post #974254.
Now that I think of it, I'm for the alias, as soon as we can clean up the tags.
