About ambiguous tags

The page http://danbooru.donmai.us/help/tags says:

• The flag for marking a tag as ambiguous is separate from the type. This means that an artist tag could be marked as ambiguous, for example. To mark a tag as ambiguous, prefix it with "ambiguous".

Does that prefix do something? Does it mean there is a list of ambiguous tags somewhere, maybe? Where is it?

I used each of the ambiguous tags "sakura" and "ambiguous:sakura", on purpose, temporarily. But I did not see anything interesting happening.

The only difference I've ever noticed is that it's noted in the "type" field of the tags list. I've been curious about it too.

It doesn't do anything anymore. In the past it would warn the user when they searched the tag that it was ambiguous to inform them to check the wiki to figure out which tag they actually wanted.

There is no way to figure out which tags are marked ambiguous but there's probably less than 100 if even 50.

Probably, there are much more ambiguous tags, because every Japanese name (Katoh, Jirou, etc.) and probably most short "catchy" names (Mash? Hansel? Oliver?) have some existing or potential ambiguity with multiple author tags and/or character tags.

Interestingly, below I listed some general tags that are expected to have 0 posts indefinitely per ambiguity.

I considered listing them somewhere, like tag groups:ambiguous — similar to tag group:subjective in that both would be some sort of "black list" to be avoided and eventually emptied regularly.

But I'm not very interested in starting that work, because there are so many of them. I'll just list a few here in this thread, instead.

• Freckle
• Guy
• Lily
• Salsa
• Strength

If someone could put together a way to query the ~3000 pages of the tag list, there is a mention of "ambiguous" under Type column where it's been applied, as OOZ said. Just can't search on it.

In my opinion, aliasing all ambiguous tags together into a single place is much better, more convenient, than listing all ambiguous tags individually.

(I'm assuming that there is not any technical limit, like "every tag must have at most 10 aliases".)

No, this is a bad idea since the information (the original tag the user added) would be lost.

Ambiguous tags as a feature are going away. I think it makes more sense to just write the info in the wiki page of the tag that's ambiguous.
