Mod discussion: deleting post comments policy

Posted under General

I usually just delete them. If they continue to do so, I mail them. If they still do it, I ban them. So far, I've only banned one guy because of that.

edit: Renamed title. It was a bit confusing at first.

Delete pointless one-liners.

I also delete all comments that are just someone bumping an image so they can say how horrid it is. Talk about counterproductive. By deleting the comment I send the image back into the abyss too.

There are many, many bad comments and I delete anything suitably stupid and frustrating. Any comment that isn't useful is of no explicit value to the site, although which "useless" comments get deleted depend on whether the mods think they're entertaining or just drivel.

I personally kill stupid comments, unless it would disrupt the context of later, useful and/or amusing comments (like in post #148353). But recently I also decided that just deleting doesn't work, because you can't see the deleted comments, so there's no stats to track, and I see repeated offenders happily spewing their drivel, so I decided a more generous application of banhammer is needed. So an especially useless, badly written and annoying comment earns a short-term block, particularly if the commenter had no other useful contributions (I'm much more forgiving for established members). We'll see how well it works, so far it seems that 6/day is the number of the b(east|ans).
