Amount of Favorites

Posted under General

I was looking through my favorites today, and decided I had a too many, so I started culling a few. Before I knew it, I had 39 left where there once were a few hundred. I had just been adding images that I liked, regardless of whether it was really a favorite of mine or not. And to me, having that many favorites seemed kind of oxymoronic.

I guess what I'm getting at is this - do you all think that the current favorite system is fine as it is, or would favorites better be reflected with a limit? And if so, what do you think would be an appropriate limit? I could easily think of at least ten images, probably would be able to comfortably fit 50, so I'd guess at around 75-100ish images would be good. Would also help to compare the tastes of different users a lot better, since they'd choose what they truly liked best.

Of course, the favorite system is alright as it is, but it's essentially just to see what people have bookmarked. There's no real way to see what they like best (unless they use favorites in moderation).

Limiting the number of favorites is definitely not a good idea. People use favorites for different things; some people seem to favorite any image that they'd ever want to see again, and some people will have a select few favorites of excellent quality. It's effectively your list to do with what you want.

No, that would be extremely harmful. Whereas I disapprove of favourites whoring (a'la what IchiMashiPotatos does, with 13K favs and counting), artificially limiting the number is harmful, as any other automatically enforced and non-negotiable constraint. I currently have 1455 favourites, and I'm very careful to only add pictures I consider _exceptionally_ good. I occasionally run a sanity check to see if I'm not approaching the 1% of pics faved mark, which would make me worry, but I've never hit it. Why should I be limited to only 100 pics?

I've been using the site for over 1.5 years, it's not inconceivable that 0.8% of content, on a site that already contains predominantly good stuff, will hit the sweet spot. I actually browse my favs list periodically, maintain it, and save for occassional "what was I thinking" moments, I would favourite every pic in there again. Heck, even LaC, who has favourited like 3 pics ever, would run above your limit.

I would support an idea of multi-stage favs, as there are indeed pics I consider best ever among my favs, but any attempts to arbitrarily set the "proper" number of favs one can have are bound to fail. Not to mention you can't teach good taste and moderation anyway, if people don't respect their favs now, they won't magically do it if they're limited. They will just stop caring.

That would be a better idea, yes. Perhaps a few that you could tag as your top 10 or something.

I have a reason behind it and they'll be going down in a few months. I'm sorting my collection to match what I have or will have on danbooru and will tag using spotlight on my Mac.

I also don't just favorite images, I actually click on them first.

May I also note that I'm not the worse.... :)
