The comments system can be abused so very easily. A single downvote can hide a comment, and seemingly, a single upvote can unhide it, even if it's by the author. (I know because I've done it, though mainly because I'll leave a legitimate comment that deviates slightly from a hugbox atmosphere, so someone gets upset.)
There should be something like a general upvote and downvote count on comments like on youtube (before they added that thumbs up and thumbs down system) so these can't happen so easily.
I think most forumgoers agree by this point that the comment voting system is a bust. The only thing to be done for it at this point is to set your comment threshold to -99 and wait for Danbooru 2.
When I open a picture, I immediately unhide comments. It's already become a habit for me. Yes, the comment system is prone to abuse, like Justin Bieber from pedophiles, but it's never really caused any real problems. Except for that yaaay~ incedent, and that bastard Meowth, and Tasukete Eirin. It's been fine otherwise.
I don't have any problem with the comment system. What is your threshold set at, 0? Some people have their thresholds set too high to see one of your comments? Whatever. It isn't like that's tracked in your user page, so it'd be hard to notice at all, let alone care, unless you were caught up in a comment flamewar or something...
Maybe add to the system an auto-unhiding of all of your own comments, if that's easily implementable and isn't how it currently is, but not really important.

Another +1. Comment voting needs to be seriously retooled. There are so many sites out there that have comment better comment voting systems. In particular, I would love a system where comments that were voted up become more visible, like with a tinted background or maybe bumped the top like YouTube. That would actually give people an alternative to just quoting them and adding "LOL" or "this!" or some other equally hated response.
Comment voting needs to go entirely, this isn't fucking Digg nor is it Youtube and if I were to implement something from any website here, those places would be the LAST to look.
The comment page needs serious overhaul and it's been on my to-do list to design a way to make it better. I'll get to it soon, unless albert beats me to it with DB2.

If people want to see all comments, that's what they do. If they think anything below -2 is no good, they can set that, too. Not forcing a single setting doesn't make it pointless.
