Editing post comments

Posted under General

Is it possible to edit your comments on image posts? I’ve seen some people saying “just edit your comment”, but I can’t find a way to do it and there’s no help on it. Searching the forum for “edit comment” doesn’t yield anything useful either. What am I missing?

I have a normal member account, but it would be odd if comment editing was only for privileged accounts.

Comment editing is one of those tricky issues.

It is far more than once or twice that I have noticed grammar mistakes or other issues with a comment of my own, then deleted and reposted the text as soon as possible. Editing would have been far more convenient.

On the other hand, free editing enables a number of ways to confuse, harm and even troll comment discussions. The phrase quoted for truth (QFT) did not emerge by chance.

A compromise is to allow free editing for the latest comment only.

I'd say a timeout for comment editing would be a good idea. Perhaps a two or three minute window, ideally.

This would allow for quick typo fixes, but comment trolling would be unlikely since a couple minutes isn't a whole lot of time for comments to gather-up.

Yeah this is a concern I have.

Probably the best solution. I have a feeling comments are implemented on a very simple level in the system though (due to their numbers) so advanced changes like this might be difficult. But what do I know?

Ultimate solution with ultimate programming overhead would be to implement an editing history for comments, just like the note histories. That way fixing and rewording comments would be possible at all times, but all previous versions of the comment would still be accessible.

But yeah, probably Too Good Too Be(come) True.

On another note, pretty much all forum software out there seems to allow unlimited editing and some just force a This post has been edited by X at Y footnote. I don’t see why Danbooru should be overly cautious of comment forgery or something.

The time is already recorded with every comment, so implementing a timeout for editing them should not add any additional strain on the server from a database perspective. Keeping a comment history, however, can vastly increase the amount of data stored per comment for comparatively little gain.

+1 to a two or three minute window for editing a comment.
