Duplicates

Posted under General

The current trend for duplicates seems to be:
-they get reported in a comment by an observant user.
-nobody does anything about it.

I noticed, however, that post #146991 was a parent of a duplicate of itself, which gave me an idea. A modification of the child system would work rather well for noting duplicates; you make the 'best' (least artifacts, highest res) version of the image the 'parent' of all other versions, and the duplicate-parent would have a colored border or be in some list of posts with duplicates or similar. A moderator could then delete the lesser duplicates, perhaps using some kind of system to merge favorites and tags, and give the remaining copy the highest score of all existing ones.

Not necessarily. You're not notified about the deletion so unless you're actively tracking a post, *by definition* you're not going to know it was deleted. I delete reported dupes all the time, though lately the trend seems to be parenting/childing because of a worry over deleting pics that have been favorited.

Suggestions to improve the effectiveness of childing dupes is a good thing of course.

Updated

I've been flagging/tagging dups since long before I had the ability to do anything about them. Since they were never deleted back then I've been unsure what to do about them now so have been leaving them.

I understand not removing duplicates with favorites, or thoses with an uploader for "user:" search (when lower quality one is older), but why not remove the lower quality dupes when they have been posted anonymously and don't have anyone favorite them?
