Unkown or Uncertain Source?

Posted under General

hi
so, like many people, i have a ba-jillion (technical term, of course) images i've saved from here and there across the inter-tubes. Over the years my dump trucks have brought me quite literally thousands of images, including ones from the previous incarnation of Danbooru.

Of course, many of these do not have source information to go with them. Assuming I've exhausted my resources tracking the source down, I'd like some help with what to put into the source field in these case:

Say i have a picture of.... Tita from Plastic Little, or Major Kusinagi from Ghost in the Shell. I dunno where i got it from anymore, but on the other hand i can say with 100% certainty who the original artists are. Is naming the artist or original developer sufficient? or does it unconditionally have to be a web site?

Updated

I'm interested in people's thoughts on this too. I've been working on organizing my archives and they may be in good enough shape soon to start uploading some of it.

I'm pretty sure I've got some quality material Danbooru doesn't yet, but with the limitations of Windows XP I don't have sources and other information bits for every file.

As Albert said, artist tags are supposed to indicate who *drew that image*, nothing more or less. Shirow may have created the Kusanagi design, but if someone else drew a particular image of her, it is not a Shirow work and should not be tagged as such.

In short, if you don't have the source, then you put nothing in the source field. Just tag character and series and any useful traits, and that's that.

so is it ok to not have a source when uploading an image?

A good portion of the contents of Danbooru have neither the source box filled nor an author tag. If you know who drew it, then it should by all means be tagged with the artist, but it's better to have no source at all than an incorrect one.

What about this idea?

We could start using the tag artist_request in a manner similar to translation_request. Images that get posted without an artist tag would then be collected in such a way to enable users to sift through them and maybe, through pure expertise, identify some of those artists. I know some people are doing that already on a scattered basis; a new tag would allow people to channel that skill effectively. (Would it be possible to have the database automatically assign such a tag if no artist was provided by the uploader?)

There was a source_request tag at one point, this could work the same way I guess.

As for automatically assigning them: the sheer number would make the tag useless, I think. Generally it's not often that an unsourced image gets sources unless someone happens upon the artist's page later, tries to upload it, gets the dupe error, and then puts in the new source URL and makes sure the tag applied. I've had this happen many times.

I'd also hesitate to do it because things like caps and magazine scans and such usually aren't sourced to artist and applying it automatically to everything without an artist would get excessive, even with some 'stopwords'.

The downsides to it aren't terrible, but the potential upsides are pretty minimal.

would it be possible to add a field in the deleted posts thing for the tags that was associated with a particular post?

that way we dont upload something, have it be rejected, and then two weeks later try again because we forgot it'd already been rejected.
