Danbooru

Image labeling game

Posted under General

I just joined, but this isn't a "Hello, world!" post. Please bear with me.

I joined mostly because I enjoy the art, but I was particularly impressed with this site because of the quality work in compiling tags on all of the images. Unless I've missed something clever on the site, this is all done by the various members on the site, correct?

There are a couple of image-labeling games that are out there now, created by Google or universities that are interested in people-powered computer learning. But basically, they're games that result in images receiving various tags for their content - a lot like the end result here.

Looking through the pics, I have to wonder how cool it would be to be able to play one of those labeling games with some of these pics (yes, even the ones non-priveledged members can see). I know Google's always been very good about making some of their programs open-source for people to modify and apply as they see fit.

Would anyone else here be interested in something like that?

EDIT: Apparently, I fail at putting in links. Here are links to two of the image-labeling games.

It wouldn't be very interesting, as danbooru pretty much _is_ a tagging game already. You stumble upon a pic, notice it has incomplete tags, so you add the missing ones. Everyone takes a slightly different route in their browsing, so different pics are seen. So a full "game" system as such would be pretty useless.

That said, a "show me random pics" feature wouldn't be bad, provided you can specify initial conditions ("random, but without crappy porn please"). That could be a useful way to seed your browsing.

Hmm. For a motivated enough crowd, I suppose the "game" as it is doesn't need any more structure than it already has. And since it's a login-only site, the only people who'll be coming in are the ones who are already somewhat motivated.

That limits the number of labelers that'll be coming through, but it certainly seems like it's been working well enough as it is.

And, as you say, a "random pics" (or even a slideshow) function would be nice. Enter in a batch of tags to prefer, some to exclude, and enjoy the adventure.

The tag blacklist option already in place would take care of the "I don't want to see this tag" problem.

Except that right now it's crippled and doesn't really work. There's no way to unhide ignored pics, nor does it work with rating:explicit, which was my primary application for tag blacklisting in the old danbooru: blacklist explicit, browse the rest, then at the end of each page unhide them briefly to check for misrates (there are always some) and move on.

The benefit to a "game" such as this one is that it will stir up the older pics that are already in the system, but are only poorly tagged. You could set it to match people up with images that have no character or copyright tags on them. Or those that consist only of "tagme"

Actually because of the API, someone could technically write this game independently of Danbooru proper, and allow it to link into other "Danbooru's". (don't know if that would be construed as an abuse of the system or not)
