Pokemon names JP to EN?

Posted under General

It was stated before in the forum, but aliases aren't possible for a couple of reasons:

1) The JP Pokemon names can be extremely generic when translated to EN; prominent examples include Crab -> Krabby, Cocoon -> Kakuna, Coil -> Magnemite, and Spear -> Beedrill.

2) According to Wikipedia, there are now 495 Pokemon in total, and that number is going to get even higher with the next Pokemon games, Pokemon Black and White. jxh2154 would probably start cutting himself if he had to alias all those.

Anyway, I undid his edit, since it was an obvious case of not lurking enough.

I thought at one point Albert had put in all of the existing-at-that-time Pokémon names in as EN → JP aliases, and then reversed them all after we had debated it. I don't know if that should set future policy, but it definitely sets precedent.

poor jxh

Pbft, I wouldn't be doing it, I know squat about pokemon outside of maybe 5-10 from the very first iteration a million years ago. =P

Hillside Moose came to the rescue anyway (thanks).

And right, we aren't doing any pokemon creature aliases. The characters are complicated enough, and the creatures would create literally hundreds of ambiguous tag clashes.
